Cold and blackened midnight
As a wood fire casts its glow
Silence in the darkness
It's a darkness few will know
A young man sits beside it
Seeking warmth to ease the chill
Staring at the flame that dances
With a soul that's grown too still
Old woman on the edges
Staying distant in her fears
An old man looking backwards
Thru the long forgotten years
All there in their own loneliness
Together in this space
They each came from a bitter world
Where they could find no place
No home beside a meadow
Just a tent upon the ground
Their paths as one now joined here
Like the others there around
And few will stop to see them
If they do they look away
Too frightened just to listen
Would not know what to say
It's better - cast a dollar
Ease the guilt and just move on
And the picture will soon vanish
With the memory soon gone
They have no clothes to give them
Can't bear to hear them cry
They cannot quench their hunger
So they dare not even try
There's a choir that's out there singing
Everywhere that you might go
And while God is in his heaven
She's the angel here below
The summer heat will threaten
The winter cold will kill
The feet sometimes are shoeless
No stomach finds its fill
They cannot see the sunrise
When each new day begins
They curse the rain from heaven
Meant to wash away their sins
They wrap themselves in blankets
Hope to find someone to share
Hope that someone will just see them
And the soul that's waiting there
All the hours long and endless
And the pain is cast about
No feeling there within them
Little hope of getting out
There's a choir that's out there singing
You can hear their voices grow
And while God is in his heaven
She's the angel here below
But in moments grace will beckon
And a mercy will arrive
Lift a heart for just a minute
Keep the beating there alive
Share a touch with no abandon
And not pull a hand away
Simply saying I am with you
And here with you I will stay
Sees the mirror in the other
And remembers where she's been
Knowing that if fate came calling
She could be there once again
We are one along this journey
I am you and you are me
And in your dark eyes so lonely
It is just my own I see
There's a choir that's out there singing
It's a song that you might know
And while God is in his heaven
We're the angels here below
