lifelines (lorraine's song)

i sat down upon a park bench
waiting for an open door
early morning sun arising
wanting courage i could pour
she came by most unexpected
heading out to start her day
she sat down in quiet thinking
til she turned a glance my way

she was first to break the silence
maybe something i'd not said
maybe both my hands were shaking
maybe both my eyes were red
thru a voice less than a whisper
took the thoughts i had to share
i just talked and she just listened
in the early morning air

   we're so different here together
   heading here and heading there
   your cup filled and overflowing
mine so empty i can't bear
we're both on the path before us
time is passing til it's lost
unseen hand has brought us both here
   where our lifelines have crossed

pushed aside what was waiting
both her eyes were fixed on me
looking deep past the surface
to what others dared not see
grace can come from nowhere
love can chance appear
in the listening of another
words that no one else can hear

   we're so different here together
   heading here and heading there
   you cup filled and overflowing
mine so empty i can't bear
we're both on the path before us
time is passing til it's lost
unseen hand has brought us both here
   where our lifelines have crossed

she's a ghost an apparition
she's an angel without wings
i just hold my two hands open
for the gift that heaven brings
no one cares how much you're knowing
til they know how much you care
i just talked and she just listened
in the early morning air

   we're so different here together
   heading here and heading there
   your cup filled and overflowing
mine so empty i can't bear
we're both on the path before us
time is passing til it's lost
unseen hand has brought us both here
   where our lifelines have crossed
