hamster in the cage that's sitting
right next door to mine
chewed right through the metal wheel
and stretched it to a line
flipped the spring lock on the door
one glance back at where he'd been
looked one way and then the other
and was never seen again
i tried my best to catch him
thought my wheel would fit the bill
i ran faster ever faster
found myself just standing still
racing rats to climb the ladder
everything becomes a blur
think you're leaving miles behind you
but in truth you're just not sure
all the scenes along the roadway
painted murals that don't move
and the circles that you're running
leave you wondering what they prove
it's the same dust in the bottom
it's the same old table top
and you'd like to step outside them
but the spinning wheel won't stop
there is comfort in these cages
bred with great monotony
and these gifted linus blankets
of familiarity
i will run til i am weary
i will run just as i will
think i'm leaving miles behind me
but in truth i'm standing still
